 Coal transportation refers to the entire logistics process from the entry of materials required for coal production into the enterprise to the delivery of commercial coal to customers. In a broad sense, coal transportation includes multiple links such as raw material procurement, raw coal mining, washing and processing, storage, transportation, sales, and comprehensive utilization of mineral and rock waste. Narrowly defined coal transportation refers to the circulation process that starts from raw coal mining, passes through sales, transportation, intermediate coal blending processing, and transfer, and finally delivers to end users for consumption. Coal transportation describes the physical flow of coal products between coal enterprises and users. Specifically, coal transportation mainly includes coal production logistics, coal sales logistics, and coal recycling logistics.

1. Coal production logistics
The production logistics of coal enterprises refers to the entire process from the landing of coal on the working face to the outward transportation of transportation tools (such as trains and cars). Due to different coal mining methods (including underground and open-pit mining), there are also significant differences in production logistics. However, in summary, the coal production logistics system includes operational links such as coal mining, storage, loading and unloading, washing, and transportation. The research on coal production logistics should also take these common links as the starting point, improve coal mining technology, reduce the number of storage, loading and unloading operations and their environmental pollution, increase the proportion of coal washing, and improve transportation efficiency.
2. Coal sales logistics
Coal sales logistics refers to the logistics of coal products between coal enterprises and users. It includes two important parts: external transportation of coal and coal utilization. The research on external transportation mainly focuses on the selection of traditional external transportation methods and routes; The research on coal utilization mainly focuses on the utilization rate of coal combustion and coal deep processing (such as coal gasification, liquefaction, etc.
3. Coal recycling logistics
Coal recycling logistics mainly includes the recycling of some waste consumed in the coal production process, the recycling of corner coal during coal mining, and the recycling of coal left behind during the internal and external transportation of coal. Waste logistics mainly occurs in two stages: firstly, the coal bed methane and coal grinding stones emitted during the coal mining process; The second is the fly ash and coal slag generated from coal utilization. The research on coal recycling logistics and waste logistics should focus on strengthening the management of recycling logistics and the research and development of comprehensive utilization technologies for waste logistics.

China's coal resources are rich in the north and poor in the south, with more in the west and less in the east. The distribution of resources determines the spatial pattern of coal production. The national coal production is mainly distributed in the Yellow River, Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, southwestern Chongqing, northern coastal areas of Hebei and Shandong, and the Heilongjiang region in the northeast of Shanxi, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, and central Henan. In terms of consumption, the spatial structure of economic development determines the spatial distribution characteristics of coal consumption. Overall, China's coal consumption shows a pattern of "rising in the southeast and low in the northwest".
